Top 5 current WWE characters – Number 4: Zack Ryder.

Posted on June 12, 2011

Welcome to number four in my list of the five best characters in the WWE right now. If you missed my number five, you can find that blog here. But on to number four. Come on. We all knew it was only a matter of time before I wrote about how awesome Zack Ryder is. Well, as the blog title indicates, at the moment Zack Ryder is the 4th best character in the WWE. The most FAQ’s will probably be as follows:

“How the hell is Zack Ryder a better character than Randy Orton?”

Because Randy Orton’s character is in a bit of a weird position right now. It seems as if his character is changing and until I see what happens to it, he’s coming in at number five. Although this week on Smackdown he seemed to be back to cold, calculating Viper, I want to give it a few weeks to see what happens with it.

“How can you say that Zack Ryder has one of the best characters in the WWE if he hasn’t appeared regularly on one of the main shows?”

Well, the question I would return with is, who else would I choose? If you think you can think of the top five characters in WWE right now without wanting to include the Long Island Iced Z then you sir are a better man than me. At the moment WWE is really short on characters. Most heel characters are too similar (Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, etc) with only one defining characteristic separating them from everyone else (For example; being Scottish). Most face characters are boring with not a lot of depth to their characters (Kofi, Riley).

And the other characters that there are to pick from are too similar to characters we’ve seen in the past. For example, The Miz’s character is very similar to Chris Jericho’s, and Alberto Del Rio has many similarities with JBL. Not that that’s a bad thing, I am just saying that those characters are not fresh in my eyes and therefore probably will not make it onto my list (Or will they? Maybe I’m just messing with you).

My point being, Zack Ryder is fresh, he’s different from everyone else on the roster right now. His Youtube show is funny as hell, and even when I watch him on WWE Superstars he isn’t bad in the ring. He is able to interact and draw heat by being vocal in the ring. Also his catchphrases are highly contagious. WWE should be marketing him in a subtle way (not how they market Cena) in order to cash in on this whilst they have the chance. Why hasn’t he got his own t-shirt? (I mean a proper t-shirt). He usually gets about 100,000 views a week on YouTube, which means there is a market to sell to. There’s demand. Cash in on the people who have got behind Ryder before it’s too late.

The problem is people like to be in a minority. Everyone loves Ryder now, because the WWE doesn’t. I guarantee though, as soon as Ryder is pushed to the moon everyone will turn on him, and that’s a shame. But until then why are we not allowed to enjoy this fresh, funny and unique character on Raw every week? Sure we get cameos, but he should be given a chance to shine. Give him the U.S title; Kofi isn’t doing anything with it.
